Viking Hiking is a 3D Platformer. You play as Bøf, A viking on his adventure to reach Valhalla. Jump, dash and use the horn as you explore a lush but challenging island!
Viking Hiking has been created by 21 passionate students at BUas.
The Process:
BUas Year 2 Block C and D, Design and create a game.
Block C was spent learning about how to create ideas for games, all the steps necessary to create a good idea, The ideas created we would work on and create in Block D.
In Block D we started working on the game, it started as a game where this viking was sent on a quest to pick the most beautiful flower for his daughter's birtday,
after some team wide discussions, we decided to change the story a bit, the goal of the Viking was now to collect runes on a mystical island, and open the gate to be allowed to enter valhalla.
At the start of the project we decided roles of every team member, my responsibilities were:
- Develop back end systems used in the game.
Which had me working on Player Telemetry systems, Checkpoint system, Graphics settings and menus etc.
- Create, maintain and publish Builds (on a weekly basis).
- Optimisation and bug fixing.
After the project had been completed, the reception from teachers, students and industry professionals during the Annual Industry Day hosted at BUas was incredibly positive,
which resulted in us winning the Best overal Y2 game, Best Art and Best Design awards.
The teachers were so impressed with our game, they allowed us to release it on Steam.
Which we worked on during the summer break, the game released the 18th of august,
The reviews are very positive.
For the Steam we worked on polishing the game and added a new section of platforming challanges to the island,
I personally worked on implementing Steam Achievements, improving the Settings menu, adding full controller support to all menus and bug fixing.
